Room for Future Growth Product Flow at FSI Today Tool Racks CNC Trimmers Single-Station Formers Shipping/ Receiving Rotary Formers A key goal for the new plant was effcient production fow in a racetrack design that minimizes redundant materials and parts handling. Manufacturing area is 44,000 ft 2 . FSI envisions almost doubling in size, separating the forming and CNC trimming operations, and replacing the current racetrack production fow with a linear fow-through pattern from East to West—in one door and out the other. Formed Solutions Today FSI (formedsolutions.com) currently occupies 50,000 ft 2 of manufacturing area. It has $3.5-million annual revenue, 20 employees, and seven forming machines—three rotaries and four single-station—from MAAC Machinery, Brown Machine, and Modern Machinery of Beaverton. These are supplemented by four 5-axis CNC trimmers from CMS North America and Multiax International. The frm has ISO 9001:2008 quality certifcation and serves customers in offce furniture, medical and industrial equipment, appliances, aerospace (approved by Boeing), and point-of-purchase displays. It forms mostly ABS, HIPS, PC, acrylic, and some HDPE. Besides vacuum and pressure forming, FSI performs compression forming of thermoplastic composites. Plastics technology february 2013 39
