MATERIALS MATERIALS MATERIALS PP Grades for Thermoforming, Film, Thin-Wall Injection Molding Two new specialty grades of PP for packaging applications have been introduced by Braskem North America, Philadelphia. Boasting outstanding stiffness and clarity and improved productivity is the new Inspire 6000 series for flm and thermoforming. The flm grades are said to have an optimum balance of stiffness and processing performance. The thermoforming grades are said to offer increased melt strength, resulting in more uniform wall thick- ness and lower part weight. Meanwhile, new Prisma injection molding PP resins are said to offer an exceptional blend of characteristics. Prisma 1910, for example, is designed for thin-wall injection molding of hot-fll, microwaveable, and freezer packaging. It boasts an "unmatched" balance of transparency, stiffness, and impact strength. (215) 841-3100 • braskem.com Want to fnd or compare materials data for different resins, grades, or suppliers? PLASPEC GLOBAL MATERIALS DATABASE New High-Temperature Nylons At October's Fakuma show in Germany, DSM Engineering Plastics (U.S. offce in Birmingham, Mich.) unveiled its next generation of Diablo high-heat-resistant nylons aimed at automotive underhood components. DSM claims its new tech- nology can deliver signifcantly improved long-term heat resistance in parts such as air-intake manifolds with integrated intercoolers, as well as ducts, charge-air cooler end caps, mixing tubes, and resonators used in the latest car engines. New Stanyl Diablo HDT 2700 is a nylon 46 with 40% glass. It can withstand a contin- uous-use temperature of 446 F (230 C), while new Akulon Diablo HDT 2500 is a nylon 6/66 with 35% glass, which withstands 428 F (220 C). Both grades boast improved resistance to FR PC Lighting Grade, PC/PET for Medical Devices Styron, Berwyn, Pa., introduced two new PC-based materials to its line of Emerge Advanced Resins at the recent Fakuma 2014 show in Germany: • Emerge PC 8830LT is a clear grade for lighting. It has a UL 94V-0 rating at 1.0 mm and 5VA rating at 2.5 mm. It boasts high light transmission and excellent processing characteristics. Designed for both indoor and outdoor applications, it is said to be an excellent base resin for light-diffusion grades, allowing for higher fux effciencies. • Emerge PC/PET 9500 CR is a high-performance blend that boasts excellent chemical and ignition resistance. It is designed for medical equipment housings and other applica- tions facing repeated exposure to a variety of cleaners and disinfectants used in hospitals. It is said to be effec- tive against the nine leading chemical antagonists. It also boasts good aesthetics, excellent toughness, and a UL 94V-0 rating at 2.0 mm. Targeted for use in automotive exterior moldings and trim such as roof-ditch moldings between roof and body sections, window-lace trim between A pillars and windshield, and belt-line body trim, Apex 1545-D40 ST extrusion compounds are said to make secondary texturing steps such as topcoating or milling unnecessary. These compounds are coextrudable, bond well to metal, and exhibit physical properties compa- rable to standard PVC, Teknor says. The company offers custom color and gloss matching to OEM standards, including various shades of black. They are also said to offer improved resistance to chemicals and gases in exhaust-gas recirculation systems and to have very good processability, resulting in fnished parts with high weld-line strength and excellent surface fnish.
