ADDITIVES ADDITIVES ADDITIVES Halogen-Free Polyolefn Compounds for Wire & Cable Jacketing New halogen-free fame-retardant (HFFR) jacketing compounds for data-center cables, control cables, and other demanding applications reportedly exhibit a higher level of fame retardance than other high-performance HFFR materials without compromising physical or electrical properties. Halguard 58300 Series HFFR compounds from Teknor Apex, Pawtucket, R.I., have limiting oxygen indices in the 53-56% range, reportedly enabling cables to pass the stringent UL 1685 vertical tray test (CSA FT4/IEE 1202) and achieve a UL 94V-0 rating with test specimens as thin as 0.025 in. Available grades are in the 48-52 Shore D hardness range. Hyperform HPN 210 M is a novel organic salt that imparts a unique crystalline orientation in injection molded HDPE that improves its stiffness and heat resis- tance. Modulus can be enhanced by up to 50%, enabling thinner walls, and HDT can be increased by 10-40° C (18-72° F), enabling HDPE to be used in waste containers, totes, crates, and pallets where PP is commonly used. Hyperform HPN 210 M reportedly improves cycle times due to shorter cooling times, reduces warpage and shrinkage, and improves pigment leveling. Similar improvements reportedly can be seen in injection molded LLDPE articles such as lids. The additive's ability to create lamellar crystal orientation of PE in the polymer fow (or machine) direction aids the reduction in shrinkage. Control of shrinkage and warpage contributes to an improvement in the overall quality of large, complex parts, opening the window for PE to become a potential material of choice in molds that traditionally run PP, without the need to retool. According to Milliken, the nucleator also promotes improved barrier proper- ties. Typical loading levels are 1000-2000 ppm. (CTI), Colorado Springs, Colo., a supplier of thermochromic (temperature- indicating) inks for packaging, has developed thermochromic color concentrates for thermoplastics. This move marks CTI's entry into the plastics arena. CTI will sell thermoconcentrate pellets (PowerCapsules) or powders for incorporation into plastics. They give consumers indication of whether a product is hot or cold, as thermo- chromic colorants are activated at specifc temperatures where the colors appear or disappear. Along with temperature indication, PowerCapsules are said to offer vibrant color, UV stability, heat stability, and recyclability. The concentrates have been qualifed in popular PP, HDPE, LLDPE/LDPE, and PS applications such as utensils, beverage closures, ice- cream spoons, baby bath toys, coffee lids, and soup bowls.
