The ZSK 58 Mc 18 has a screw diameter of 58 mm and three possible screw configu- rations, covering a wide range of applications. Its high torque enables high throughput rates—for example, up to 3306 lb/hr in compounding nylon 6 with 30% glass fiber; or up to 3086 lb/hr for PP with 40% talc or calcium carbonate. 201-327-6300 • A specialty nylon that is said to combine the chemical resistance of semi-crystalline nylons with the high gloss and depth-of-view of amorphous plastics has been developed by BASF, Florham Park, N.J. It is aimed primarily at automotive interior components that require high gloss and scratch resistance without the need for coating. Ultramid Deep Gloss is said to enable structured, functionalized surfaces for new operational concepts in cars. The new nylon is also characterized by high chemical and good UV resistance and is said to repro- duce structures true to detail, allowing for a high-contrast interplay of light and shadow. Outstanding abrasion resistance compared with other uncoated, high-gloss materials is also claimed. Now available globally in sample quantities, Ultramid Deep Gloss can be injection molded without variothermal mold technology. The material is expected to meet the growing trend for a "piano-black look" in car interiors and reportedly provides designers with new opportunities to imple- ment unusual textures such as ripples, waves, hammer finish, lines, and diamonds. Also, surfaces can be structured with haptic design elements. In combination with suitable sensor technology, this allows for integrated, functionalized designs.
